5G is Open For Business

Ericsson recently acquired Cradlepoint, a leader in Wireless Edge WAN solutions (4G & 5G for enterprises), to expand its presence in the enterprise market and accelerate 5G enterprise adoption. What’s the significance of this deal? As commercial 5G networks are getting deployed around the world, the next wave of 5G expansion will involve private enterprises setting up their own 5G private network that are dedicated, secure and reliable. With 5G private network, businesses will be able to embrace digitalization and achieve industrial-grade capabilities. For example, ABB has cooperated with Ericsson to set up a private 5G network that enables flexible automated production. According to Nokia’s CTO, the private network opportunity for enterprises could be 2x bigger than commercial wireless network as 5G business use cases will become more prominent than consumer use cases.

Based out of Sweden, Ericsson is a leading telecom equipment supplier that is well-positioned to benefit from the ramp-up in 5G network deployment globally. The company now has more than 100 5G contracts globally.

With competitive 5G product portfolio, the company is gaining market share in Europe, India, Australia, Japan given growing security concerns on Huawei. In the US, Ericsson is seeing strong order growth driven by 5G rollouts on mmWave and mid-band spectrum. Even in China, Ericsson has won big contracts with the three major telecom operators.

In addition to telecom networks, Ericsson is increasingly collaborating with enterprises on 5G private networks and IoT applications. The recent acquisition of Cradlepoint will allow Ericsson to capture more market share in the rapidly expanding 5G enterprise space and boost returns on investments in the network.
